Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center

The Madrona Marsh Preserve is located in Torrance, California. It is a type of wetland called a vernal marsh. “Vernal” means spring or green. Madrona Preserve’s wetlands does not have a built-in water source. When the winter and spring rains fall, enough water accumulates to sustain the marsh and provides a resting spot for migrating birds. The Madrona Marsh is an “urban oasis”, providing valuable habitat in this urban area for birds, insects, spiders, frogs, reptiles, and small mammals.

The Madrona Marsh Preserve is an educational and recreational resource. Staff and volunteers offer nature walks, docent tours, bird watching and more.

Torrance Beach

Torrance Beach is a long wide sandy beach (and the only beach) in the city of Torrance, California. This is the southernmost of the big beaches on Santa Monica Bay which extends from the Malibu area to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It has a local nickname of RAT Beach which stands for various things like Right At Torrance, Right After Torrance, Redondo And Torrence, etc. Torrance Beach has a nice large parking lot, safe graded ramps to the beach, lifeguards, access to a long bike path, and nice facilities. It tends to be a little less crowded than it’s neighboring beaches to the north, Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan Beach.

The mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month, and on special occasions.

Western Museum of Flight in Torrance  

The Western Museum of Flight is a non-profit, educational institution dedicated to preserving and displaying aircraft history and artifacts of Southern California’s aviation heritage. The Air Museum’s educational programs give children an opportunity to see and touch the airplanes that made aviation history. The Air Museum offers an inside look at completed and in-progress aircraft restoration projects. The Western Museum of Flight’s collection includes numerous Warbirds, aircraft and target drones, piston and jet aircraft engines, aircraft components, aircraft ejection seats, World War II instruments, aircrew accessories, and an extensive model aircraft collection.
