Spend Sundays with Children’s Maritime Institute in Long Beach
Explore, Discover and Learn on Tall Ship American Pride at Pine Avenue Pier
Are you looking for something new and different to do with your kids on the weekend? The Children’s Maritime Institute invites you to explore, discover, learn and set sail with them on Tall Ship American Pride every Sunday through Weekend Wonders and a Shoreline Sail. These two programs run weekly through March 30. They will be paused in April for scheduled ship maintenance, but will return again in May, including a special Sunset Sail on Mother’s Day!
DISCLOSURE: This is a paid partnership with Los Angeles Maritime Institute, but our enthusiasm is 100% genuine. We’re excited to share this with our community!
Tall Ship American Pride is docked on Pine Avenue Pier in Rainbow Harbor, and the crew is ready to welcome you aboard every Sunday between 12:00 and 3:00 pm for Weekend Wonders with free deck tours and interactive lessons on a variety of topics. No pre-registration or sign-up is required. Lessons begin at 1:00 pm, and they rotate through four weekly categories, which means you can visit multiple times to build on what you’ve learned!
Sponsored by the Port of Long Beach, Weekend Wonders is designed for adults and kids of all ages. When you come aboard, you’re encouraged to ask questions, form and test hypotheses, and participate in a variety of activities that will connect you to the maritime world and marine environment through this immersive experience aboard a historic tall ship!
- Explore the local marine and maritime environment in and around Long Beach, including the Port of Long Beach and the LA River Watershed.
- Discover the history of Tall Ship American Pride and tall ships in general, as well as the maritime arts and real-life examples of STEAM.
- Learn how you can get involved with tall ship sailing and their other educational programs, as well as becoming an environmental steward.
You can also purchase tickets to join them for a Shoreline Sail every Sunday at 3:30 pm (boarding begins at 3:00 pm). During the two-hour, round-trip sail around the Long Beach harbor, you can take part in helping the crew set the sails or just sit back and relax. It’s up to you! You can also bring snacks and drinks to enjoy aboard the sail. Shoreline Sail tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for children (12 and under), and they can be purchased online or dockside prior to the sail.
The Children’s Maritime Institute (CMI) is the Long Beach division of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI), a San Pedro-based non-profit organization that has been providing education and adventure at sea for more than 30 years. CMI was established when they acquired Tall Ship American Pride – the Official Tall Ship of the City of Long Beach – in 2018. LAMI also offers three summer camp options through their Tall Ship Island Adventure Sea Camp: a day camp in Long Beach and two sleepaway camp options out of San Pedro.
