About South Bay Volunteers and the Local Anchor Foundation
South Bay Volunteers is the community facing initiative of the Local Anchor Foundation, the philanthropic extension of Local Anchor LLC. While Local Anchor serves as a trusted community hub sharing local events, stories, and resources, the Local Anchor Foundation focuses on giving back through hands-on volunteerism, fundraising, and nonprofit support.
The foundation is committed to creating a sense of belonging and shared responsibility across the South Bay by connecting individuals, families, and organizations with meaningful ways to serve. Its mission centers on respect, leadership, active engagement, and strengthening the local nonprofit ecosystem.
How It All Began
The story of South Bay Volunteers began in 2017 during Hurricane Harvey. What started as a local moms Facebook group quickly transformed into a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together.
Although located 1,500 miles away in the South Bay of Los Angeles, the group mobilized within days to support families affected by the hurricane. With the help of a donated moving truck, space provided by a local mall, and support from a nonprofit partner, an entire truckload of donated supplies was collected and delivered within 72 hours.
That experience became a defining moment. It showed the power of community action and sparked a long term commitment to service that continues today.
Community Impact Over the Years
Since that first effort, South Bay Volunteers and the Local Anchor Foundation have led and supported dozens of impactful initiatives across the region.
Projects have included collecting and sorting thousands of crayons for Title 1 schools through the South Bay Crayon Collection in partnership with The Crayon Collection.
The Annual Valentineās Day Card Collection Drive has gathered more than 12,000 handmade cards over the years, which were delivered to hospital patients, frontline healthcare workers, firefighters, and retirement homes throughout the South Bay.
Through a partnership with Kiwanis, plastic caps were repurposed into buddy benches, promoting connection and inclusion while supporting recycling efforts.
During the pandemic, Project South Bay Heroes raised more than $15,000 to provide meals from local restaurants to over 1,000 frontline healthcare workers.
Ongoing blood drives in collaboration with the LA Kings have supported Childrenās Hospital Los Angeles, with the potential to impact over 100 lives.
Holiday support initiatives have grown significantly over time. Partnerships with local agencies have allowed the foundation to support and sponsor hundreds of families during the holiday season through Torrance Unified School District, Redondo Beach Police Department, Richstone Family Centers, Breastfeed LA, Los Angeles Unified School District, Communityās Child, Momentum Pediatric Therapy Network and Olive Crest.
The Launch of SouthBayVolunteers.org
