Is Maui a Good Place for Kids?
Yes, Maui is an excellent place for kids! The island has something for everyone, from its beautiful beaches to fun activities. Maui is also a great place to learn about Hawaiian culture and history.
Some of the best things to do in Maui with kids include:
Maui Ocean Center
One of the best things to do in Maui with kids is visiting the Maui Ocean Center. This marine life park is one of the largest in Hawaii and is home to a wide variety of sea creatures. Kids will love getting up close and personal with sharks, stingrays, and turtles. They’ll also enjoy learning about the different types of coral and fish that live in Maui’s reefs.
Haleakala National Park
For a more active Maui vacation, visit Haleakala National Park: This park is home to the world’s largest dormant volcano. Kids will love hiking through the lush foliage and spotting native birds and plants. And at the end of the hike, they can enjoy a breathtaking view of Maui from the summit.
Swimming and Snorkeling
Maui’s beaches are some of the best in the world for swimming and snorkeling. Keep in mind that the tides can sometimes get rough, however. You can also hop aboard a chartered boat from Ma’alaea Harbor to hit some fantastic snorkeling spots offshore.
Spot Some Turtles
You’ll definitely catch a glimpse of sea turtles when you’re out snorkeling, but if you want to see some of these beautiful creatures on the land, head to Ho’okipa Beach. You’ll spot Hawaiin Green Sea Turtles sunbathing in big groups across the sand at this small local beach. The best time to see them is in the late afternoon.
Whale Watching
Maui is one of the best places in the world to go whale watching. During the winter months, humpback whales come to Maui to mate and give birth. Kids will love seeing these massive creatures up close.
The Road to Hana
The Hana Highway is one of Maui’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s a winding road that takes you through the island’s rainforest and past waterfalls, beaches, and Maui’s famous Seven Sacred Pools. The drive can be long (it takes about two hours to get from Lahaina to Hana, but it can be much slower with traffic), but it’s definitely worth it. And your kids will love all the sights along the way.
Old Lahaina Luau
No trip to Hawaii would be complete without a traditional luau, and you can’t get much more authentic than the Old Lahaina Luau. You’ll be treated to a traditional pig roast in the “Imu” ā the Hawaiian underground oven and feast, followed by a luau complete with fire dancing. All of this against a sunset background right on the beach.
Snorkeling Black Rock
Black Rock is one of Maui’s most popular snorkeling spots. It’s located in Lahaina and is home to a wide variety of fish and coral. Kids will love exploring the underwater world here.
Eating Malasadas in Makawao
Maui is home to many delicious Hawaiian foods. And one of our favorites is malasadas. These fried dough balls are often served with sugar or chocolate sauce and make an excellent snack for kids (and adults!). You can find them at most bakeries on the island.
Picking Pineapples
Maui is home to many pineapple plantations. And one of the best things to do with kids is to go pineapple picking. Kids will love searching for ripe pineapples and then eating them fresh from the plant.
We hope you have a great time on your family vacation! Aloha! Maui no ka ‘oi! (Maui is the best!)
