South Bay Giving Back: Sprouts of Promise
On this week’s South Bay Giving Back, we’d like to cast the spotlight on Sprouts of Promise. Sprouts of Promise is a nonprofit in Los Angeles and Orange County, educating children and families on the importance of eating healthy with fresh produce from local farmers. Currently, this nonprofit is giving back to the community by connecting food-insecure individuals with locally grown produce.
South Bay Giving Back: Sprouts of Promise
Tell us a little about you and your business?
“Sprouts of Promise runs the Hermosa Beach Farmerā Market by the pier. Weāve run this market for five years, and love our beach community!”
Please tell us about Sprouts of Promise. Describe what you are doing to support our community?
“Like so many businesses, our farmerās market was forced to close due to the pandemic. We became concerned for our farmers, who had fields full of spring produce and had suddenly lost many of their sales outlets. Similarly, many families had lost their sources of income, putting some at risk of homelessness. We created a program whereby people can purchase produce for a family in need, from a farmer in need! Families are given nutritious local produce, and farmers are able to sell the produce theyāve grown!”
Who are you supporting with this project?
“Weāve partnered with the Salvation Armyās Westwood Transitional Village. Everyone living at the Transitional Village is transitioning out of homelessness and many have lost their jobs, during the pandemic.”
What inspired you to do this project?
“It was simple, we saw two problems. One, farmers had produce but were unable to sell it and two, vulnerable families needed food during a health crisis. And thanks to the generosity of our community members, we turned two problems into one solution!”
How can the community support Sprouts of Promise?
“Community members who want to help a family in need and a farmer in need can donate to our program by going to our website which isĀ www.farmermark.comĀ .”
Anything else you would like us to include?
“100% of all donations go to purchasing produce from farmers for needy families. Our organization is absorbing all overhead costs. Every donation counts!”
