Community Spotlight: Steve & Kate’s Camp
Tell us about your Summer Camp
At Steve & Kate’s Camp, kids take chances and take charge, shaping their day, their way. More choices and fewer expectations creates more possibilities, more self-trust, and less self-doubt.
This summer campers will choose interest-based, pod-like groups, where they can immerse themselves in activities or projects with an emphasis that speaks to their tastes.
These interest groups include sewing, building, performing arts, coding/gaming, sports & recreation, or a mix of everything! Within these groups campers decide what they want to do, and for how long. Whether they’re spending the day sampling everything, or honing in on honing in on one specific skill, one thing is for sure: kids are in control.
Campers will also have the opportunity to enjoy socially distanced indoor and outdoor recreation, performances, games, inflatables, and a circuit of rotating activities like Keva Blocks and tamale making. We’ve also got plenty of perks for parents. Lunch and snacks are included daily, and any unused Day Passes will be automatically refunded in full at the end of summer.
What is your camp best known for?
Steve & Kate’s Camp is best known for its self directed philosophy, our large number of interest based activities and our parent perks.
Describe your COVID Protocols and Precautions in Place?
This summer we will be grouping our kids into squads made up of 12-16 campers (depending on summer covid regulations), they will stay with their squads for the entire time they are at camp. Squads will be assigned consistent staff members, too. Squad equipment and materials will be sanitized throughout the day. Staff and campers will have to complete a wellness survey and/or other screening to identify any potential health concerns upon arrival each day. They will also be required to wear masks.
You can expect the following at all locations: bathrooms cleaned between each group, equipment sanitized and disinfected before use each day, individual places to store camper belongings, and plenty of hand sanitizer, hand washing, and self-applied sunscreen to go around.
What do campers need to bring with them to camp?
Campers need to bring a water bottle, a bathing suit and towel (for our slip and slide), and be ready to have a blast!
Tell us a little about you!
This is my 4th summer as the director of Steve & Kate’s Manhattan Beach. I live in Hermosa and have a 15 year old son who has grown up going to Steve & Kate’s Camp. He is in High School now and plays basketball at Redondo Union High School.
What do you enjoy doing in the South Bay when you are not working?
When I am not running camp I love to go on long beach bike rides, practice yoga almost daily, and I run a non-profit that uses a mindfulness based teaching model to tutor children with special needs.
