Winter STEAM Project: Create Your Own Nature Sculpture
First it’s time to head outdoors for a Nature Walk! Plan a walk outside with your grownup. You can go for a nature walk around your neighborhood, a park, or even your own backyard. Remember to keep safety in mind at all times, both for yourself and the environment. It’s important stay with your grownup at all times and only collect natural materials where it is safe and respectful to do so.
Along the way collect items that can be used in your sculpture, like leaves, flowers, bark, pinecones, pods, sticks in different sizes, grass, and vines. Once you have a good assortment and you’ve been inspired by nature it’s time to get started on your STEAM project.
Supply List
- Basket or Bucket for collecting
- Nature Materials*: Leaves, flowers, pinecones, etc.
- Additional materials (optional): String, yarn, jute, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners
- Ruler
- Magnifying Glass
* These are just ideas. Explore & enjoy finding natural materials that may not be listed above.
Time to BUILD!
- Examine each item you collected and consider how you would like to use it in your sculpture.
- Start building!
- REMEMBER: There is no right or wrong when it comes to your imagination.
- Challenge Yourself: How tall can you build your sculpture? Measure with a ruler.
- Challenge a Friend: Who can build the tallest sculpture that can stay standing for 60 seconds?
- For Advanced Builders: You could sketch your idea for your sculpture first and see if you can bring it to life.
