South Bay Food Drive Supporting Food For Kids!
Local Anchor, Avenue Mama and local South Bay Businesses are thrilled to join The Volunteer Center South Bay-Harbor-Long Beach and support their Food For Kids Program. Food for Kids provides low-income elementary students at Title I schools with food for the weekend. A majority of the students that receive the bags are homeless! Each bag sent home with a child includes items for breakfast, lunch and dinner for Saturday and Sunday.
Here’s how you can help!
- We will be collecting food at all your favorite local businesses in the South Bay from Friday, August 10 – Friday, August 27th! Check out the collection list, pick up a few items the next time you are at the store, then stop by one of the businesses below and drop off your items. They will only be accepting the items on the list below, so please stick to only those items.
- Check on the Volunteer Center’s Amazon Wish List and purchase items with your Amazon Account to be sent directly to their pantry.
- If you’d like to make a monetary donation, you can do so here.
Click here to review the Non-Perishable Food Shopping List. Please double check expiration dates and NO glass containers.
After our drive concludes, we will gather at the Volunteer Center in Torrance, Thursday, August 30 at 10am, and help sort and bag all the food collected. This will be a project that we can do with our kids to help teach them about giving back to our community.

ABOUT FOOD FOR KIDS
While students who live below the poverty line are eligible for the Free and Reduced Meal Program, providing breakfast and lunch at school during the week, many of their families are unable to feed them adequately on the weekends. These students then arrive at school on Monday without the proper nourishment, which can negatively affect their school performance and self-esteem.
That’s where Food For Kids comes in… it’s a donation-driven food pantry that provides non-perishable food to these Title 1 -eligible elementary school students on Fridays, giving their families food to nourish them over the weekend. Each week, volunteers assemble and deliver bags filled with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 dinners, as well as 1 of 5 nutrition flyers provided by Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center and the USDA. Last year The Volunteer Center provided over 5,000 bags of food and served about 120 families a week. Learn more at www.volcenter.org/food-for-kids.
