RBPD: The Line Up – Not Your Usual Suspects Surf Contest

ByLocal Anchor April 12, 2018December 2, 2021

Get ready for “The Line Up – Not Your Usual Suspects Surf Contest.” The Redondo Beach Police Department takes pride in our innovative commitment to law enforcement and community outreach programs. Exploring unique opportunities for community engagement are at the forefront of our mission.

The Redondo Beach Police Department wants you to get in the Line Up! The SURF Line UP that is. Enter the surf contest, no matter your skill level or experience. If you don’t surf, come join the festivities and watch some of the South Bay’s best surfers in action and see which team will win the “Golden Donut” trophy.

On Saturday, May 5, 2018 we gather for a first of its kind Police and Surfer Partnership. We hope you will join us for a great day at the beach supporting Special Olympics, Wounded Heroes of America and the Redondo Beach Police Foundation. The RBPD Surf Line Up is Not Your Usual Suspects. It is based on a unique surf Team format which includes all levels of surfers: from first timers to rippers. The distinctive team combination and setting will use the ocean’s power and our community’s love of surfing to building relationships and unite. Our amazing sponsors, will be giving away some cool surf stuff while you have a rare opportunity to experience what having fun while giving is all about.

Proceeds: The proceeds from the “Line Up” will benefit three amazing charities that will help further understanding and physical challenges through surfing and ocean-related activities while promoting a partnership with the Redondo Beach Police Department. We are the community – leading the way in law enforcement creating a legacy of love of surfing by sharing the ocean’s power to heal and unite.

Cost: Free with a suggested donation to one of our three charities. Entry includes contest, T-shirt, lunch and chance to win some amazing gifts from local sponsors.

Awards & Photo Ops: The Coveted “Golden Donut” will be presented to the winning team. The final awards will be given out on the beach after the final heat of the day around 2:00pm.

Format: This is a unique team surf contest that brings together surfers, friends, family, Veterans Organization, Special Olympic Athletes, and Police Officers designed to be fun and foster teamwork and friendly competition. Teams will consist a mix of 5 team members from pros to people who have never surfed before. The Contest Committee will assign one or two team members who will either be a Wounded Hero Veteran, a Special Olympic Athlete or a Redondo Beach Police Officer. Competitors will self-rate their ability and the Contest Committee will determine ultimate skill level and make up the teams. Beginners and first time surfers are encouraged and welcome. Or if you want to enter as a Team of four or five, you can do so and your final members will be assigned to your team.

Charities:

The Redondo Beach Police Foundation (RBPF) is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that serves as a community partner to the Redondo Beach Police Department to help make Redondo Beach, the most innovative and safest city in the region.  By providing resources and support to the Redondo Beach Police Department, the Foundation plays a critical role in taking public safety beyond what our government tax dollars will allow.  Technology is rapidly evolving and equipment gets worn.  Community policing through innovative and creative programs and initiatives require funding.  The Redondo Beach Police Foundation issues grants to our local police department so our men and women in blue have the best training, equipment and programs to perform at their highest level.

The Redondo Beach Police Foundation (RBPF) is governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of business leaders, civic leaders and concerned citizens who are invested in the public safety of Redondo Beach.  As an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Foundation depends entirely on the generosity of corporations, businesses, individuals, foundations, and other philanthropic organizations to support its operations and grant program.  Donations to the Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.  No public tax dollars are accepted for its operations or programming.

Special Olympics Southern California
Through the power of sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment — on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential. Please view the following video to see the full spectrum of our activities.

The mission of Special Olympics Southern California is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Our vision is to promote acceptance, inclusion, and well‐being for people with intellectual disabilities through sports.

Wounded Heroes of America
Although we usually began our relationships with some measure of financial assistance, the glue that keeps us together is the fellowship we have created among our Combat Wounded Vets.At Wounded Heroes of America, we like to put the bottom line on top. Our mission is to help Combat Wounded Vets from Iraq and Afghanistan in whatever ways we can.

  • We seek to offer: Financial Assistance
  • Help fighting depression and loneliness
  • Fellowship and sense of belonging.
  • Gratitude for the sacrifices our heroes have made.
  • Education about the challenges combat wounded face.
