Please tell us about the Redondo Beach Police Department Domestic Violence Victim Advocacy Program
The Redondo Beach Police Department Domestic Violence Victim Advocacy Program provides assistance to victims of domestic violence living in Redondo Beach. We work to educate families about the cycle of violence, provide victims with community resources, and refer the perpetrator to programs aimed at gaining the skills to live a life free of rage, power and control. The advocacy team is made up of volunteers from the community who are on call 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Who are you supporting with the Domestic Violence Victim Advocacy Program?
Our program supports victims and survivors of domestic violence. Sadly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience domestic violence from their partner. Violence within a family is about power and control. It is not about a one time incident when one person loses their temper and acts out their frustration on another. Violence in intimate relationships is about one person having power over another person’s movements, choices, thoughts and feelings. The person tries to maintain control by keeping another person emotionally, financially, and geographically dependent upon them. Many times alcohol and drugs play a big part in this cycle of behavior.
What inspired you to start this program?
We want to help victims break the cycle of abuse, rebuild their lives, and regain a sense of safety and self-worth. Emotional and practical support is crucial for healing and recovery. Seeking help can be one of the most challenging steps for victims of domestic violence. Often times the victims in these situations live in fear. Fear of doing the wrong thing, saying the wrong words, embarrassing their partner, feeling they are not good enough. They may make excuses for their partners behavior. They often feel tremendous shame and guilt which keeps them from reaching out and asking for help. We want to provide a safe resource that enables them to seek help.
How can the community support Redondo Beach Police Department Domestic Violence Victim Advocacy Program?
The community is a crucial ally in empowering victims and survivors by spreading awareness about the issue and the resources available to them. Financial contributions (gift cards, etc.) are vital to helping victims escape a domestic violence situation as they enable access to immediate resources and essential supplies.
