From the Classroom to the Cookie Cart
Janice DeMarti spent more than 20 years as an educator and preschool director before a major life transition led her in an entirely new direction. When her mother suffered a stroke, Janice took on the role of caregiver while still juggling full-time work and family life in the aftermath of the pandemic. The weight of it all was significant.
“I was at my lowest while working full-time in the classroom coming back from the pandemic, running a family at home, and driving to multiple assisted living facilities to be present for my mom,” Janice shares. “Sitting down with a cookie and an icing bag completely shut down the noise of the outside world and my only focus became the lines on my cookie.”
That quiet focus, those 15 minutes of calm she discovered through cookie decorating, became the seed of something larger. Janice joined Shelby St. Claire’s women in business community, and what started as a therapeutic outlet grew into a full business built around bringing that same sense of peace, creativity, and joy to others.

“Everyone is battling something right now, even children,” she reflects. “To see those moments of relief, happiness, and peace on someone else’s face from decorating a cookie gives me the greatest sense of success.”
That mission, helping people find a moment of peace and creativity, shapes every class she teaches and every event she brings her cart to.
Community at the Center
Janice credits the South Bay community directly for the growth of Sprinkled Cookie. She launched the business nearly 4 years ago after connecting with local communities in the area, and those relationships became her foundation.
“Community is the foundation of Sprinkled Cookie,” she says. “It wasn’t until I found communities in the South Bay that my cookie business took off almost 4 years ago. Join just one community here in the South Bay and you will find some of your most unique experiences, forever friends and loudest cheerleaders.”
Her advice to anyone starting out on their own path centers on that same principle: find your village.
“No matter the path, it takes a village. Find one. We have the greatest ones just here in the South Bay. You can only go so far on your own.”
