Community Spotlight: Mychal’s Learning Place
Tell us about Mychal’s Learning Place.
Mychal’s Learning Place was started in 2001 by Ed Lynch in honor of his daughter Mychal. What started as an after school program for youth with developmental disabilities, a place Ed would have wanted Mychal to go to, quickly expanded to include an adult program designed to help young adults with developmental disabilities achieve their goals and dreams.
Over the years we realized that individuals with disabilities face an 85% unemployment rate, so to combat this we started our social enterprises, Mychal’s Bakery & Coffee and Mychal’s Print & Embroidery, as a way to give our students on-the-job training and employment opportunities. With these businesses we are hoping to show the community that our students are capable and able to accomplishing anything they set out to do.
Please tell us more about who you are supporting with Mychal’s Learning Place.
Youth and young adults with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, and more.
What inspired you to start this program?
Mychal’s Learning Place believes individuals with disabilities deserve to live an independent and fulfilling life. Every day we teach, prepare and steward our students because nobody should have their goals and opportunities limited simply because they have a disability.
How can the community support Mychal’s Learning Place?
Spread the word! We would appreciate you thinking of our social enterprises whenever you are looking for freshly baked items or need a garment printed or embroidered! Mychal’s Bakery & Coffee can do a variety of custom orders including cookies, specialty logo cookies, mini cupcakes, coffee cake, brownies, loaves and so much more. Mychal’s Print & Embroidery can help with shirts, sweatshirts, hats, uniforms, aprons, you name it, if you need something printed or embroidered, please give us a shot.
