What started as a day to honor their mother & her love for plum cakes, turned into an annual festival! Grandma Elly would bake delicious pflaumenkuchen (plum cake) for her daughter Dolores, 1st lady of Old World, every year for her birthday since her birthday is in August when Italian plums are ripe. When she was 5 years old, her & her mother went back to Germany in 1939 & WWII broke out leaving them stuck for 9 years. Dolores was sent to kinderheim to keep her safe. The war made the costs of plums expensive, but her mom was determined to make the cake for her daughter. She saved enough money to buy the plums for the birthday cake. Elly was an American citizen & befriended an American soldier who was going to the city where the kinderheim was & agreed to hand deliver the cake to Dolores. When they reunited, Elly promised to make the cake for her daughter every year for her birthday, no matter what. She kept her promise & baked the cake until she was 100 years old.
When her mother passed, Dolores gave the recipe to the bakers at Old World to keep her mother’s tradition alive. Dolores passed away in 2010 & is honored alongside her mother, Elly, each year with our Plum Fest💜
