The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
RUHS Theatre Arts presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the Tony-winning musical comedy, on stage at the Redondo Union High School Auditorium in Redondo Beach. Six quirky middle-school spellers compete for a local spelling title, trading funny and touching stories about their lives between rounds. Audience members can be invited up to take part, which makes every show a little different.
It is a fun night of local student theater and one of the better things to do in Redondo Beach this weekend. The Saturday evening and Sunday matinee shows are the best picks for families with younger kids.
The show won the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book. All patrons ages 2 and up need a ticket. The October 1 and 2 performances are rated PG-13 and recommended for ages 13 and up, as they include mature language, sexual references and humor about puberty. Doors open 30 minutes before each show, and tickets are scanned on mobile devices at the Auditorium entrance. Parking in the auditorium lot is limited, so watch for permit signs and allow extra time for street parking. The production uses flashing light effects; House Management can let viewers know before those moments.
