South Bay Gives Back – Lasagna Love

Lasagna Love was started at the beginning of the pandemic, when the founder of Good to Mama was looking for a way to help moms in her community. A local Redondo Beach mom heard about the movement and decided to get involved in this incredible movement, helping to support local South Bay families!

Tell us a little about you:

I am a 32 year old South Bay native, born in Redondo Beach and raised in Torrance. I’m lucky to have been able to call the South Bay my home. I am a stay at home mom, raising my 1.5 year old son, River. My husband, although born and raised in Pennsylvania, has called the South Bay his home for 20+ years.

Please tell us about your project:

Lasagna Love was started at the beginning of the pandemic, when the founder of Good to Mama was looking for a way to help moms in her community. She and her toddler started making and delivering meals to families in the neighborhood who were struggling, whether that struggle was financial, emotional, or simply a feeling of overwhelm. Lasagna Love has since grown into a national movement, with thousands of people all cooking and delivering meals to families in their communities. What we do is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities. Our mission is not only to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families, but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress.

Who are you supporting with this project?

Families in need who might be struggling to get food on the table, whether that struggle is financial, emotional, or simply a feeling of overwhelm.

What inspired you to do this project?

One day during the “Safer at Home” order, I saw a Today show segment that featured Lasagna Love. I instantly knew that I wanted to be a part of this organization. Although I was so grateful to be healthy and home with my family, lockdown and COVID really had me feeling helpless. I was concerned for my community, my friends, and my family. As a mom, I’ve really come to understand how important community is. Lasagna Love gave me a chance to connect and help. Volunteering during COVID has been a pleasant distraction from the constant chaos of the world. Giving, helping others, using my hands and creating–Lasagna Love has checked all of those “purposeful” boxes for me.

How can the community support your efforts?

We’re always looking for new cooks! You can sign up through our webpage www.lasagnalove.org Or – You can donate money to our national nonprofit through our webpage as well! If you’d like to donate dollars locally please contact me! Any and all help is appreciated as everything we do is out of pocket. Donations can be cash/Venmo/Paypal or grocery gift cards. If you’d like to donate non-perishables, we always need lasagna noodles, ricotta, parmesan, mozzarella, marinara sauce, tomato paste, canned tomatoes, and Italian seasonings.

Anything else you would like us to include?

When I signed up to become a “Lasagna Mama,” I was told there was no regional leader for my area. I happily agreed to step up and take on the role as Regional Leader of South Los Angeles/OC. When I started in September, I oversaw about 30 volunteers. As of today, I support volunteers and match families with over 200 volunteers!
