California Coastal Cleanup Day 2025: Join the Trashure Hunt in the South Bay
California Coastal Cleanup Day returns on Saturday, September 20, 2025, inviting volunteers across the state to roll up their sleeves and protect our environment. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this year’s event introduces the exciting new Trashure Hunt, transforming the cleanup into the world’s largest scavenger hunt with prizes hidden at cleanup sites. From Dockweiler and Manhattan Beach to Hermosa, Redondo, Torrance, and Palos Verdes, South Bay residents have plenty of opportunities to get involved. By participating, families, students, and community groups can make a direct impact on local beaches and waterways while joining one of the largest volunteer movements in the world.
What is California Coastal Cleanup Day?
California Coastal Cleanup Day is the state’s largest annual volunteer event, drawing tens of thousands of people who come together to clean up beaches, rivers, lakes, and waterways. Held every September, the effort is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, the largest volunteer event on the planet, organized by the Ocean Conservancy.
This year’s cleanup takes place on Saturday, September 20, 2025, and marks the 40th anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day. Volunteers across the state will not only help remove trash but also participate in the new Trashure Hunt, a scavenger hunt that turns the cleanup into an exciting game with prizes.
No matter where you live in California, your efforts make a difference. Every creek, river, and storm drain ultimately flows to the ocean, so picking up trash inland is just as important as cleaning up along the coast.

Why Coastal Cleanup Day Matters
Since its start in 1985, California Coastal Cleanup Day has removed millions of pounds of trash from our waterways and coastline. More importantly, it raises awareness about how everyday litter travels through streets, storm drains, and rivers to end up in the ocean. By volunteering, participants are directly protecting marine wildlife and creating cleaner communities.
Plan Your Day
California Coastal Cleanup Day is about more than just picking up trash, it’s about joining a movement. Whether you head to Dockweiler, Manhattan Beach, Redondo, or Rancho Palos Verdes, you’ll be part of a 40-year tradition of stewardship and community pride.
