“Founded by Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik, Lettuce Grow is on a mission to make growing your own healthy food at home fast, easy, and fun – regardless of space, time, knowledge, income, or experience.
We’ll teach you how to grow in 5 minutes a week with 200+ varieties of greens, veggies, fruits, and herbs in our self-watering, self-fertilizing, hydroponic Farmstand.
Our farmstands are made from ocean plastic and fully recyclable. Prop 65 compliant, food grade, FDA-certified materials ensure the safest possible growing environment..

What inspired the launch of the business?
“When the founders started their family, they began to think about their food – what goes into it and how it’s produced. They knew the best food they could feed their children and themselves was fresh, clean, and unprocessed. They set out to grow a garden for easy access to the most wholesome ingredients, but with their busy schedules, they’d never grown so much as a cactus!
They vowed to find a way for everyone – regardless of space, time, knowledge, income, or experience – to grow their own food quickly and easily (and have fun doing it), and Lettuce Grow and Lettuce Give were born!
Our goal is to build an expanding community of passionate growers (that’s you!) deeply connected through good food and sustainable living. It started with their family, then ours, but we hope it will continue with yours – we’re looking forward to growing better, together!”
What is one of your proudest moments?
“My daughter identifying different vegetables and screaming in excitement, “swiss chard”, and taking a leaf off the farmstand to eat, followed by ‘yummy, more please!’ Witnessing other kids’ and families’ excitement about growing and eating as well makes the entire Lettuce Grow family very proud!”
What can one expect when purchasing a Farmstand?
“You will find a friendly team passionate about helping families grow at least 20% of their own food. We have an open door policy and welcome visitors to learn and partake in the experience. We’d like to educate and be there each step of the way. We’ll stay connected through My Farm, the Lettuce Grow app, text, and email. You will become part of our growing family!”
Tell us a little about you!
“I lived in the South Bay for 14 years, in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. I’ve enjoyed the South Bay lifestyle and have created strong friendships through the years. I moved away to an island in the Caribbean for a few years, but settled back to beach living with my now 2.5 year-old daughter. We love the beach, the community, and are extremely grateful for the village we have.”
What do you enjoy doing in the South bay when you are not working?
“Walking or biking on the Strand, the beach, volunteering, letting the little one run around at The Point, eating at all the amazing restaurants the South Bay has to offer, play dates, all the local fun events (volleyball, summer concerts, Hometown Fair, Fireworks night, etc.)”
How do you give back to the community?
“Lettuce Grow is committed to improving access to fresh, healthy food for everyone, regardless of income. Our goal is to preserve the environment for future generations and to help create a better food system for all of us.
The Lettuce Give program partners with foundations, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations to grant one Farmstand for every 10 sold.”
