Community Spotlight: Piper Preschool

Tell us about Piper Preschool.

I [Crystal Free] feel like I’ve been in education forever at this point, but the idea for Piper goes back to my days at Brentwood School. At that time, I was working in Admissions and saw the impact a preschool experience can have on a child. Soon after, I drew floor plans on a napkin (literally) and was lucky enough to build them. The vision continued and Piper now has four campuses… Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Orange County, and our newest home in Manhattan Beach.

What inspired you to launch Piper Preschool?

While working at Brentwood School, my main role was to evaluate preschool applicants for Kindergarten admissions. Through that work, I was privy to the need for high-quality preschools that are equipped to inform parents about how their children learn. I then had the opportunity to develop a unique philosophy that incorporates both a blended curriculum as well as a focus on the parent experience. Ultimately, I was inspired to launch this vision along with the foundation of creating a community.

What is one of your proudest moments?

There are so many incredible moments when you work with families and teachers. Watching children grow with us from babies, to toddlers, and then graduate with a confident sense of self… there’s nothing better. Watching parents who first met at Piper now plan vacations together… amazing.

As a mom myself, the preschool years are so so special, and we (parents) go through a lot of vulnerable moments together (i.e sleepless nights, potty training, separation, etc.). Other than a pediatrician, we are many parents’ first partners in raising their children. Being trusted to share in those years isn’t taken lightly, and makes me incredibly proud of our whole team.

What can one expect to find at Piper Preschool?

From the start, I always wanted to create a place where people wanted to be – whether a child, parent, faculty, or member of our outside community – so I’m hoping you feel like you’re in a home away from home, and a sense of community as soon as you walk through the door.

It’s always been a core value of ours to create a feeling of belonging, and to provide parents with a lot of opportunities to really get to know one another. Right when you enter our campus in Manhattan Beach, you step into the Community Room, and I absolutely love seeing parents grabbing a coffee together or setting up shop to work for the day, while their child is in school.

Do you give back to the community?

We have built really great relationships and are proud members of the Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach Chambers of Commerce. We also sponsor and love attending local events like Fiesta Hermosa, the Pumpkin Races, Hermosa for the Holidays, and more.

Anything else you would like us to include?

Just come see us, meet some of our teachers, picture your child here, and just see if we’re your people. We love meeting new families and really love what we do. We also love Prosecco. Join us on a weekend and we’ll prove it.
