Los Angeles Beaches Want Your Kid’s Artwork for An Important Cause

The breathtaking view on Los Angeles beaches can only be improved with the sight of your child’s drawing plastered on every trashcan. Thanks to LA’s Can the Trash! Clean Beaches Poster Contest your young Picasso can get discovered all while helping to keep the coast clean.

Can the Trash! Clean Beaches Poster Contest

The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors sponsors an annual Clean Beaches Poster Contest. Each year the winning entry is featured on the trash cans across all Los Angeles Beaches from Redondo all the way up to Zuma. Living in LA affords young kids the privilege of growing up at the ocean, and it also provides them with the perfect opportunity to learn about why it’s crucial to keep beaches clean and prevent pollution.

Every year LA County residents in third through fifth grade are invited to enter their poster designs into the Can the Trash! poster contest. The drawings should represent ideas on how to keep our oceans and beaches pollution-free and healthy. Each of the five County Supervisorial Districts selects one winner from each grade level for a total of 15 winners. All 15 winners will have their artwork displayed on trash barrels on Los Angeles beaches throughout the summer season.

How To Enter the Contest

To enter, have your kids create their poster art in color on an 8.5″ x 11″ white sheet of paper, in landscape orientation. Artwork should be 100 percent original material created solely by your child and feature no copyrighted text or characters. Artwork can be submitted online here, in person, or by mail. Entries are accepted year-round, but the deadline for the 2022 contest is January 9, 2022.

If you need some help getting started, the contest website features a gallery of past winning entries as well as several videos and other learning resources on pollution and the ocean. You can also download a free activity book that discusses topics like local watershed, water conservation, and simple steps kids can take to help minimize pollution. Spend the day at the beach, visit a local aquarium, or read books about marine life for some inspiration.
