What inspired you to launch this business?
I got into Sylvan because I was at a crossroads in my life where I had left teaching, needed a way to support myself and my kids and wanted something that I was excited about. I had leadership and management experience from being a logistics officer in the Air Force, a Masters in Human Relations, business experience, and 12 years as a teacher. I knew my passion was in helping others.
It was a big discovery process. I looked at different successful tutoring franchises and loved Sylvan because Sylvan truly loves education like none of the others. They have educational leaders at their headquarters who lead their curriculum development, assessment, and delivery for the entire franchise. They work with the best and most current research and technology. They understand what motivates children of all ages and how to help them achieve their goals. Sylvan supports the selfless, hard working teachers and schools and is big on being involved in the community. They are celebrating 40 years and are #1 in tutoring.
It was my first time running a business and I’m doing it all on my own, so I wanted the support and experience of a successful franchise. For all of these reasons I chose sylvan as my next step for my family, my community, and myself.
Tell us a little about you.
I live in Torrance, have two sons in college, and a daughter in third grade. My daughter attends Sylvan for reading, math, writing, and homework support! We also have a cat, Cleo.
Do you give back to the community? Favorite organizations to support?
I am one of three Leaders of my daughter’s Girls Scout Troop. I started the troop last year at her school, and we are now a thriving, multi-level troop who just finished our first successful cookie season… what a blast! Also, our centers are Certified California Green businesses–we believe it’s important to all do our part for sustainability. We regularly donate scholarships for Ed Foundation silent auctions, sponsor jog-a-thons, and more. Last but not least, we love participating in Local Anchor’s community programs such as Valentine’s & Thanksgiving Kindness card-making and collection, and we sponsored two large families last Christmas for their Holiday Helpers program.
What do you enjoy doing in the South Bay when you are not working?
In my free time I love to be with family and friends, cook new things, exercise, appreciate the arts, and explore nature.
