How Millennial Moms Are Utilizing Social Media To Make Money
Is your Facebook or Instagram feed filled with posts from friends embarking on new business endeavors? Does it seem like every event you are invited to is for a product line? You aren’t alone! But what is really behind the insurgence of social marketing companies?
This isn’t anything new. In fact a lot of these companies have been around for decades. Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware to name a few. However, more people are realizing the true opportunities that these companies have to offer.
Everyone has heard of the friend of a friend of an acquaintance that is driving a free car or getting a free vacation or earning six figures. But what if I told you that those people actually exist, it’s not just a made up story to sell more products. In fact I myself earned a free all expenses paid vacation to the Bahamas after only a few months with a social marketing company. But what drove me to embark on that journey? That is what I am here to answer for you.
I have a full time corporate job, and two little ones. Yet with the skyrocketing prices of homes in the South Bay and the lack of cost of living adjustments being provided by companies I was in search for something more. A quick and painless way to make additional income to take the pressure off some of the household expenses. I didn’t want to go back to school, I already have a Masters. I didn’t want to invest thousands of dollars in additional training’s or certifications that would take months or years to complete. And I didn’t want to take a part time job that would take me away from my family for even more hours.
It was during that thought process that I was approached by a friend about joining a social marketing company, Monat. Although I hesitated for quite a while, I knew that it made financial sense. The buy in was low, and there were no additional obligations to buy, sell or carry inventory ever! So why not? I had previously started a blog the prior year and although it was rather successful it was only covering my latte and designer handbag habit. The true blogging money would take years and hundreds of thousands of followers to earn.
It was only after I actually joined the social marketing world that I realized how insanely large it was. How many different companies there were and how there were people just like me earning things that a corporate setting could never provide for them. In May I was asked to do a Podcast for Parent Pump Radio about why Millennial Moms are gravitating towards social marketing and/or blogging as viable sources of income.Ā Ā To hear my full interview on Parent Pump Radio in which I also discuss how globalization has added to the ability for all of us to reach a mass market,Ā click here.
What it comes down to is rather simple. There are three distinct reasons why Millennial Moms are gravitating to social media as a stream of income.
We grew up with it.
We grew up sharing our lives and now that we are moms we share our children’s lives. At times we do over share; but in a world that is more divided than ever either by distance or by the decline of family support, it is something we crave. To have a village, to find others that can relate to our journey’s.
We are a generation that no longer has the grandmother watching our children because our mothers are still working. Or with the long commute times it is time prohibitive to drop the kids at grandma’s instead of a day care center on the way home. Oddly enough when we share our lives and struggles on social media we receive that support that we desperately need.
We are Ambitious.
Contrary to popular belief Millennial Moms are actually super passionate and ambitious. Some of us are the top income earners in our household. We for the most part graduated from college and some even from graduate school. We want to have it all. The husband, the kids, the career and we want to look good doing it. Social Media allows us to post about our successes and our challenges.
People no longer stay in the same career for their entire lives, we like to explore what else is out there. We also want the option to be able to stay at home with our children. Therefore, we aren’t afraid to take risks and fail, we aren’t afraid to work for start ups, and we aren’t afraid to invest a few hundred dollars on a product line if it is something we love and want to share with our family and friends.
We weigh our options.
The third reason that so many Millennial Moms are using Social Media as a stream of income is because it is insanely cheap to do, sometimes it’s even free. To get my blog up and running the cost was less than $200, I made that back within 30 days of launching. I now have nearly 10,000 followers and growing.
To join my social marketing company I invested $300. My return on investment has been unfathomable. Like I mentioned before I didn’t have to go back to school, or spend thousands on a certification in hopes that it would lead to a better position. I just took a leap of faith that I could speak my truth and do it on social media.
What it all comes down to is the fact that the world has changed. How people learn about products and try products has changed. Whether you want to write about products on a blog or you want to market and sell products on Facebook and Instagram the potential is limitless. Find something you are passionate about, share it with others and make money, it is truly that simple!
