Torrance Student Make Care Packages for Children in Local Hospitals
Tell us about your project?
I make care packages for kids that are inpatient or receiving medical treatment. I started this program in Massachusetts and created over 400 bags. Now that I live here I would like to get things up and running in the South Bay. My care packages are grouped by age and having many fun toys, crafts and games in them. My hope is to bring joy to others while they are going through a tough time.
Who are you supporting with this project?
I am supporting children going through a tough medical journey. Those that are inpatient, receiving treatment or going through a flare of their illness.
What inspired you to do this project?
I have always wanted to be a child life specialist or a pediatric nurse. I was excited to volunteer at a hospital and then Covid hot and I couldn’t. I created this project on the East Coast as a way to bring joy to kids in the hospital. I was able to expand to do individual bags as well. Then I got sick myself and had to take a break. Now that I am doing better I want to get things going again. having been so sick myself I know how special it is to receive a care package and I want to bring that joy to so many more kids and expand to adults.
How can the community support your efforts?
I have an amazon wishlist full of the items I put in the bags. I also have a venmo and I take the money donated to purchase more supplies. I also have a nomination form so parents and kids can request a bag.
