Summer vacation is just around the corner, but before you hit the summer camps and day trips, there’s still plenty of fun and excitement in May. Check out some of our favorite family-friendly things to do with kids this month.
LA County Fair
May 5 – 29
The LA County Fair is back and celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. With food, games, rides, exhibits, and concerts there’s so much to do, you could spend the entire month here.
Free Comic Book Day
May 7
Calling all comic book fans! Leave your allowance at home and head to a local comic book store to score a free comic on this nationwide event that takes place on the first Saturday of May each year. Check the Free Comic Book Day website to find a participating shop near you. This year’s giveaway titles include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon Adventures XY and more.
Monarch Butterfly Mother’s Day Event
May 7
What better way to celebrate mom than out exploring Mother Nature? Kids can put together a beautiful bouquet and learn all about Monarch butterflies at this free event hosted by the National Parks Services.
MOMentum Place
May 8
The Mother’s Day extravaganza is back at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. Treat mom and the entire family to a spectacular performance of aerial acts, modern dance, juggling, and more.
Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest and Folk Fest
May 15
Put your dancing shoes on and head to Paramount Ranch for a music-filled day. The 60th annual festival includes live bluegrass performances, folk dancing, crafts, sing-alongs, and more.
NHM’s Bug Fair 2022
May 21 – 22
The bugs are back! Celebrating 36 years of all things creepy and crawly, the Natural History Museum’s annual Bug Fair is here again. Insect fans will enjoy close-up encounters with live bugs and learn all about the local insect life in Los Angeles.
Museums of the Arroyo Day
May 22
The annual event is back to treat LA families to free admission to six local museums focused on local heritage. The museums participating include Heritage Square, Pasadena Museum of History, Gamble House, the Lummis Home, the Los Angeles Police Museum, and the Autry’s Historic Southwest Museum (Mt. Washington campus).
Star Wars Celebration
May 25 – 28
May the 4th might be Star Wars Day, but you can keep the force growing strong all month long with this must-see event for all Star Wars fans. The four-day festival celebrating all things Star Wars is landing at the Anaheim Convention center with screenings, exclusive merchandise, celebrity guests, panels, autograph sessions, fan-inspired activities, costumes, and more.
LA Fleet Week
May 27 – 30
LA Fleet Week is an annual, multi-day celebration of our nation’s Sea Services held on the LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. Events and activities include active duty ship tours, concerts and live performances, and aircraft flyovers.
Fiesta Hermosa
May 28 – 30
Fiesta Hermosa is back and in full swing for the first time since the pandemic. Spend Memorial Day Weekend checking out artisans, vendors, and fun family-friendly activities in the sunshine on the beach.
